Roscrea man Steve Carroll completes challenge in Spain
Trailwalker is most likely the greatest charity team walk of the world. The four member of every team walk/run 100km in less than 32 hours. The members of the team must remain together at all times: they start together, stay together and finish together. Spanish Trailwalker is the equivalent of Irish Trailtrekker, which took place on June 7th and on two shorter distances: 25k or 50k.
The goal?? To fight poverty and injustice around the world. That is why the teams commit to raising funds for Oxfam Intermón, the Spanish branch of Oxfam . All the funds go to many Oxfam projects all over the world, from South America to the Horn of Africa, where women and young girls have to walk many km a day to carry water to their villages. Project “Water Bank” consists of building wells, installing pipes and santitation facilities in order to make their lifes a bit easier.

Madrid Trailwalker took place only a few days ago, on July 5th, in Guadarrama mountain range and Lozoya valley, some 80km north of Madrid city. It was a warm day, but still cooler than usual. 139 teams took part in the walk, including Mr. Carroll´s “UN PASO MÁS” (one step further/one step more).
Roscrea man Steve Carroll proved himself the greatest and fastest fundraiser I´ve ever met. In less than a month and thanks to his family and friends in Roscrea (and the rest of ROI I guess) he raised most of the 3354€ that his/our team currently have. Donations are still very welcome, despite the fact the walk has already taken place. Mr. Carroll leaded an international team: Eva Endress (Germany), Dominic “The Terminator”* Mc Grath (ROI), Victor Rodríguez (Spain). David del Valle (Spain) and Malachy Murphy (Dublin city) were the support team. Without their help, the team wouldn´t have been able to accomplish the walk. David found himself walking, expectedly, 60k, after Eva´s injury. Malachy took great care of all of us, always with a smile and encouraging words. Despite the (sometimes) scorching heat (28ºC), the steep slopes (as high as 1734m above sea level), the blisters, the aches and pains, Mr. Carroll showed no flaws and proved himself extremely fit. He also showed his truly caring side for us strugglers. After nearly 27 of walking, Steve´s team crossed the finish line.
I couldn´t be more grateful to Mr. Carroll, and he couldn´t probably be more committed to the Oxfam cause: to fight poverty and injustice all over the world.
Roscrea people: be proud of this great man: Steven Carroll.
PS: Dominic “The Terminator” Mc Grath is so fit that he wouldn´t have noticed my weight had I hopped on his back, or had he noticed, he wouldn´t have cared that much, just like The Terminator.
