Seattle State Police Band To Help Roscrea Commemorate World
You are in · RoscreaOnline · Community · Features

Tuesday September 30th will prove to be a very historic day for the town on Roscrea. Throughout the afternoon of the 30th a major event will commemorate all the Roscrea people who both fought and died in World War 1.

Tuesday September 30th will prove to be a very historic day for the town on Roscrea.  Throughout the afternoon of the 30th a major event will commemorate all the Roscrea people who both fought and died in World War 1.
The Seattle State Police Pipe and Drum Band through Roscrea Credit Union connections has kindly accepted an invitation to visit Roscrea as part of the commemoration which will also involve an Ecumenical Service at St Cronan’s Church of Ireland, Church Street at 3.30pm.

On September 30th the US Seattle State Police Pipe & Drum Band will visit Roscrea to help commemorate all those who fought and/or died from the area in World War 1.  Pictured are the organisers and sponsors of the event. Also captured is the presentation of the “list of the fallen” by Dick Conroy to Adrian Hewson.  The credit union are delighted to have a major role in the organising of such an important event.

James Marks (Roscrea Scouts), Michael McEvoy (Ireland Reaching Out), Martin Matthews (Ireland Reaching Out), Paul Fogarty (Sponsors), Adrian Hewson (Chief Celebrant of Ecumenical Mass on September 30th), John Martin (Sponsors), Dick Conroy (Roscrea Credit Union & Ireland Reaching Out), Brian King (Roscrea Credit Union/Roscrea Enhancement Committee), Brian Redmond (Roscrea Heritage Society), Conor Abbott (Sponsors & Roscrea Scouts), Ger O’Meara (Roscrea Scouts)

Brian King, The Manager of Roscrea Credit Union and Chairman of the local Enhancement Committee spoke this week about the event, how it came about and what would happen on the afternoon of the 30th of September.

Brian said that the event has a strong credit union involvement and he explained why.  Dick Conroy the Secretary of the Credit Union has spoken for the last two years about the importance of organising an event in Roscrea during 2014 to commemorate Roscrea people’s involvement in World War 1.  It was envisaged that this event would take place in November but due to other commitments no formal event was ever actually announced.  In June, Hugh Keane a long serving Director of Roscrea Credit Union approached Brian and said there was a chance that he could through his American connections namely his brother John Keane (Irish Counsel In Seattle) get the Seattle Police Pipe and Drum Band to visit Roscrea at the end of their Irish Tour on September 30th.  From there it was a case of marrying both ideas and getting as many people on board as possible to help make the event a unique and long remembered Roscrea occasion.

Brian King said planning has been difficult for various reasons but the organising committee is now confident that the event will be a great success.  Apart from Roscrea Credit Union’s involvement, the committee is delighted to have Paul Fogarty and the White House on board as sponsors and are delighted to have Roscrea Scouts involved, Members of the Organisation of National Ex-Servicemen and “Ireland Reaching Out”.  Brian King said that outside of Dick and Hugh the help of Martin Matthews, Michael McEvoy, Anne Feehan, Joe Coughlan Eamonn Horan and the local scouts has proved invaluable.  Brian King reserved his greatest thanks to Adrian Hewson who has kindly volunteered to organise the “Ecumenical Service”.

The Band will commence playing at 2.45pm on September 30th where they will gather on Barrack Hill, opposite the Roscrea Garda Station which they will visit early in the afternoon.  From Barrack Hill the Band led by a part of Roscrea Scouts and a Colour Party from Members of “The National Ex-Servicemen” will depart at 3.10pm approximately and will parade down Main Street, down Castle Street and up to St Croann’s Church on Church Street, arriving at 3.30pm.

At 3.30pm the Ecumenical Service will commence featuring prayers, songs, poetry from local contributors and tunes from the Seattle Pipe and Drum Band.

Most importantly the service will also include reciting the names of the Roscrea People that died in World War 1.  Dick Conroy has gathered as many of these names as possible from available sources.  Dick explained this week that the committee would love to establish a list of all Roscrea People who served in The Great War (WW1).  Dick commented that records for those who served are difficult to source but that he has sourced as much as he can for now.  He went on to say that “In order not to have to sift through the thousands of service records we would appreciate knowing the servicemen’s (or servicewomen’s) names”.  He concluded by asking all members of the public to let us know the names of any of their relatives who did enlist.  While appeals have been made in the past through Facebook and other media, the response to date is small and it is hoped that this request for names and information reaches a larger audience and will yield much greater results..  We also encourage them to attend this Commemoration Service for the Roscrea Fallen, which is the first of other commemorations that will occur throughout the coming year”.  Dick can be contacted at dick.conroy@gmail.com.

To conclude the ceremony it is hoped to have a Bugler present who will play “The Last Post”.  The Seattle Pipe and Drum Band will then parade out of the Church and up Castle Street where it will gather between the Castle and The White House to provide some more entertainment to a public that we hope will still be celebrating an All-Ireland victory from the previous Saturday!.  Paul Fogarty and the White House have kindly invited everyone to return to the White House after the service where refreshments will be served.  The organising committee also have some music and singing organised to help entertain our American Guests before they depart Roscrea later that evening for the last leg of their journey before returning to the United States on Wednesday morning.

Brian King went on to elaborate on Dick Conroy’s announcement of other commemorations.  Brian said that the committee will also be organising a plaque and tree planting ceremony in November and that a lot of work was underway to help launch an exhibition in Roscrea Library in November with war memorabilia of a particular Roscrea interest.  Brian encouraged anyone with artefacts, documentation etc that they would like to loan the exhibition to contact Dick Conroy who together with his fellow Ireland Reaching Out Committee members hope to have a very impressive exhibition on display.

In conclusion Brian said that he had hoped to also use this occasion to showcase the town to some of the key business leaders in Seattle.  Through Hugh Keane, Brian King had official correspondence from the Mayor of Seattle (Ed Murray) who said he was most disappointed to be leaving Ireland two days before the event but he was very grateful for the invitation.  Brian said he had extended an open invitation to the Mayor and to the Director for the City of Seattle, Mike Peters and Uriel Ybarra (office of the Mayor) to return at any time and enjoy all that our great town has to offer.  A number of other dignitaries however will be present in Roscrea on September 30th including the Seattle Chief of Police and it is certainly envisaged that they will enjoy their few hours spent here.  Chairman of Roscrea Credit Union, Seán Hogan was on hand to compliment everyone’s involvement in the event.  Seán said that this is one of numerous low cost but high impact projects that the credit union has engaged with this year.  Seán complimented all the individuals and groups involved and in particular he complimented, Hugh Keane, Dick Conroy and Brian King who he said epitomised the voluntary ethos of the credit union.

The list of those from Roscrea that died in World War 1 is published below.  The committee will update the list accordingly as more information presents itself.  Indeed, if any of these servicemen named below is related to you, the committee would love to hear from you and listen to any stories of their exploits you might wish to tell.
