Remembering Pat Dynan ( Roscrea) 1940-2014

by Seamus O’ Doherty

News of the death of Pat Dynan , Green Street, on November 19th last was received with great sadness, around Roscrea and its environs. Pat was a pleasant , mild mannered gentleman and was well known and respected in his beloved home town.
Born in Roscrea during World War 2 and the youngest of four children, Pat would have seen hard times as he grew up, but hurling and football at Primary school and club level, gave him a focus.Christy Maher and Paddy Healy ,along with the boys’ school teachers, were among the promoters of gaelic games in the town . The football club, Inane Rovers, was founded in 1950 ,with its first meeting held in mid January of that year.

Pat Dynan is the first player on left, in the back row , for the Roscrea team photograph prior to the 1968 county final

Early Success

Pat’s hurling and gaelic football careers proved very successful, with many notable achievements to his name. As a youth , in 1957, he scored the point that beat Toomevara in the North Tipp Junior Football final. It was Inane Rovers’ 6th consecutive title . Unfortunately, Grangemockler proved too strong  in the county semi final.

His first major hurling honour came in 1958 when Roscrea , won the County minor title . They beat Thurles Sarsfields in the final by 6-8 to 5-3 ,at Nenagh. There was great rejoicing in the town when the team returned by train and bonfires burned throughout the town, as team captain Mickey Phelan complete with Sean Treacy cup was chaired through the streets, by enthusiastic supporters. It was Roscrea’s first Minor title and the club went on to win a total of six in a row.

Inane Rovers won the 1958 North Junior football title, beating Toomevara in a replay,  but having overcome Lattin Cullen convincingly in the county semi final, lost by a point to Cahir Slashers in the final . In 1959 Inane beat Kilruane  in the North Junior Final , Knockgraffon in the county semi final, but lost to Moyle Rovers in the County final 3-5 to 2-0.  Of course 1958 /59 were great years for Inane Rovers, because the club had the captaincy and significant representation on the  North Selection, which won the County Senior Football title.

Pat Dynan ( middle of front row holding the sliothar) was the captain of Roscrea’s first North Tipperary Under 21 winning team. The 1961 final against Kildangan was played at Mac Donagh Park, Nenagh, on May  6th 1962.

Moving Up

In 1961 Pat was a key man in Inane’s Junior success lining out at midfield, in the county final win ( 4-8 to 0-4) over Golden Kilfeacle, at Nenagh. This followed a county semi final success against Mullinahone. The North championship was unfinished, after Inane beat Eire Og, Nenagh ( 5-11 to 1-2) in their opening game.
In Senior football, St Flannans ( Inane/Moneygall/ Toomevara) beat a BorrisIleigh selection ( 3-8 to 1-3) in the North Final, at Nenagh They then beat Ardfinnan by 2-6 to 1-7 in the county semi final, before drawing with Lattin Cullen ,1-7 each, in the final, at Thurles . Pat went on as a substitute that day and lined out at midfield  in the replay, which St Flannan’s won  by 0-6 to 0-3, to claim the O’ Dwyer cup . So Pat achieved a remarkable double, winning Junior and Senior county football honours in the same year.

Pat was an established senior hurler by 1961 and played in a high scoring North quarter final loss,( 9-7 to 6-8) to Kilruane Mac Donaghs  . Roscrea won their first North ( it didn’t extend to a county final) under 21 hurling title for 1961, when Pat captained the team which beat Borrisokane, Newport and Kildangan. The final against Kildangan, played on May 6th 1962 at Nenagh, was a runaway victory -7-10 to 0-2. Pat, who lined out at centre back and was one of the outstanding players on view, scored a point from a ‘65’.

In 1963 he won his first North Senior hurling medal, when Roscrea beat Toomevara ( who were trying to win a 4th consecutive title) in the final, at Nenagh, 2-12 to 1-8 . Pat lined out at midfield with Mick Minogue , who reckoned Dynan’s display that day was his best ever for Roscrea and really terrific when measured against such top class opposition. In an absorbing game, Pat scored 0-3 from frees, which helped keep Roscrea level until late goals from team captain Mickey Nolan and Phil O’ Meara clinched the title. It was Roscrea’s first North title since 1954 and the attendance of  4,080 got great value for their money. The club beat Moycarkey Borris by a point ( 1-12 to 4-2) in the county semi final, with Pat contributing 0-7 to Roscrea’s tally. Unfortunately, a bereavement in the camp before the county final against Thurles Sarsfields, in Nenagh, led to numerous changes by the selectors and the team didn’t hit their best form ,losing by 4-10 to 2-10.His long time colleague ,Mick Minogue, felt that moving Pat out of midfield, in the reshuffle, upset the balance of the team. Pat’s impressive club displays saw him selected in the Tipperary squad for the Oireachtas competition, which they won, by overcoming Wexford, in the October decider.

Roscrea lost the North final to Eire Og, Nenagh ( 5-12 to 2-8), in 1964 .Pat was team captain and lined out at midfield, before switching to right half back for the second half. They recovered to trounce Eire Og Annacarty ( 3-16 to 1-3) in the county quarter final, but were then beaten by Thurles Sarsfields,( 3-9 to 1-10) in the county semi final, despite having more possession.
Inane Rovers won the North Senior Final in 1966, beating Newport by 2-5 to 0-8. Afterwards, the team pipped Lattin Cullen  1-8 to 1-6 in the county quarter final, but lost to Clonmel Commercials in the county semi final.

After two disappointing years ,Roscrea won the North Senior Hurling title again in 1967, beating Moneygall (4-15 to 3-8). The county quarter final against Drom Inch presented difficulties for Roscrea, who were lucky to draw , 0-10 to 2-4. The replay was a different story and Roscrea , helped by 0-3 from Pat ,won by 5-17 to 2-2.  Pat  scored an impressive 1-7, as they overcame Moycarkey Borris in the county semi final, by 3-14 to 1-7. Sadly, an underwhelming performance, without the injured Francis Loughnane, saw Carrick Davins win the Dan Breen Cup, by 2-10 to 2-7.Pat lined out at left half forward and contributed 0-1, from a free.

The North senior title was retained in 1968, beating BorrisIleigh in the final . A county quarter final win over Marlfield  ( 5-15 to 1-2)  and a semi final success over Moyne Templetuohy ( 3-7 to 2-6) earned Roscrea another tilt at Thurles Sarsfields and this time the Dan Breen cup was won, under the captaincy of John Dillon. Pat had been omitted from the starting team, but he was introduced at left half back for the second half and made a significant contribution to a famous victory. In a Tipperary Yearbook article, John O’ Grady ( Culbaire), when highlighting an impressive second half display by the Roscrea half back line, noted that Pat’s  introduction  ‘‘gave fine balance to the line, on the left’.’

The North Junior Football title was won again in 1969,  when Lorrha were beaten in the final ,with Pat lining out at left corner back, Unfortunately due to delays in finishing the North championship , Lorrha had been nominated to represent the Division in the county championship .As in his hurling, Pat was also an accomplished footballer and his versatility saw him lining out in defence, midfield and attack for the green and gold of Inane.

The North and County Hurling titles were retained in 1969 & 70, but 1971 was the big year with North , Munster 1969 ( beat Glen Rovers) & 1970 ( beat Clarecastle), and All Ireland club  1970 ( beat St Rynaghs) titles all claimed. The county title was ‘borrowed’ by Moyne Templetuohy, but not withstanding a disappointing Roscrea display, other achievements were more important.

Other Activity

During the Summer of 1971 the Ras Tailteann ( Bicycle Race) came to Roscrea, which hosted a stage end, before the next day’s finish in Dublin. An under 13 hurling tournament was organised for local clubs to coincide with the occasion and Pat turned his hand to refereeing. He understood the juvenile game and officiated in a pleasant manner. My memory of him that year is playing heroically for Antigen, against the neighbouring Bacon Factory, in the 1969 Munster Inter Firm Final, at St.Cronan’s Park, on  January 30th . On that freezing, foggy Saturday, Antigen took the honours by 2-9 to 1-11, having trailed by 3 points at half time. John Moloney ( Bansha) was the referee . Unfortunately, Antigen failed to add the All Ireland title to their Munster success, losing the final to Clover Meats ( Waterford) by 3-10 to 3-9.

Official duties
After his playing days ended Pat served as an official with Roscrea and Inane Rovers. He was Vice Chairman of Inane Rovers in 1975, the club’s Silver Jubilee year and 1976, a year in which he served as a Tipperary Minor Football selector. He had a great capacity to raise funds, so it was no surprise when he became Hurling club Draw Secretary, working with Barry Barrett , Draw Chairman, when money was being raised to build the clubhouse at St. Cronan’s Park . The weekly draw started in 1978 and Pat served as Secretary for 65 of them. It was a tough job ( based in the Pathe Hotel on Friday and Monday nights) and I succeeded him in the role, for the final 26 weeks !  At the end of the 91 weeks, the full cost of the development was paid and the club was not burdened with any debt, when the premises was officially opened, on June 1st ,1980.

Pat was all for the team and disliked selfish play. Indeed one Tipperary senior hurler felt his wrath ,after the 1983 Munster semi final loss to Waterford, at Pairc Ui Chaoimh .Pat told him what he thought of a ‘go it alone’ attitude. The player didn’t line out in any further championship games for his county. Pat was active in Bord na nOg at this time and did great work with the club’s Under 12 football team that year, helped by Tom Mc Carthy and Tadhg O’ Connor. He also presented a shield and medals, in partnership with Peter Rigney, for a Juvenile football league, which was played on the CBS pitch for several years, starting in 1979.

The Jimmy Magee All Stars came to Roscrea in 1987 to play a football game for charity and their opponents were the Roscrea Senior hurling team, Tipperary county champions  of 1968. Pat lined out with great enthusiasm and my memory suggests that he was obliged to seek absolution from Fr. Michael Cleary, following an over zealous challenge.

During his hurling career Pat was noted for his versatility and he wore the red and white ,on every line of the pitch. He even played in goal, on a memorable occasion, at Croke Park, in 1969.

In November 1993, Roscrea Hurling club hosted a Gala Silver Jubilee celebration, in The Pathe Hotel, to honour the 1968/69/70 teams, which won the Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship. Pat was in great form that night and enjoyed the recollections of their halcyon days, with a wonderful group of hurlers.
In 2006 the great Roscrea teams of the 1968-1980 era ,which inter alia won six county, two Munster and an All Ireland title were honoured by the Tipperary GAA  Board ,on county final day. Unfortunately, Pat had been unwell and didn’t attend ,so I sent a match programme to him, with all the details of the club’s glorious days . He wrote a delightful letter of thanks and was equally chuffed, when others which mentioned his exploits were delivered, in subsequent years.
In December 2006, I met him at the Roscrea Hurling Club appreciation night and he was thrilled to receive an award for services to the club. He had a fine recollection of previous decades and it was clear that the enjoyment and friendships of those years, meant a lot to him.

In December 2008, the successful Minor team of 1958 was honoured by Roscrea Hurling Club, in Grant’s Hotel  and another presentation followed. Pat was overjoyed to meet so many of his former colleagues and have an opportunity to catch up with them. From the 1958 Minor team only Mickey Nolan , Harry Loughnane and Pat were active, when the Senior win was achieved in 1968.
Only two Roscrea men won county Senior hurling and football medals – Mickey Nolan and Pat Dynan. If it was easy, there would have been many more ! Mick Minogue recently reminded me that Pat was a very good footballer, could play in any position and was always competitive. It was sad, but appropriate, that Inane Rovers had won the Junior  Football county title, just over a fortnight before he died. It was the club’s first success in that championship, since Pat ran the show from midfield, in 1961.

Working Man

Career wise Pat was an Antigen man from 1955 to 1987, when he accepted an offer of redundancy. He soon moved into a supervisory role with FAS and subsequently was seen in the colours of Victor Mitchell, Auctioneer and Paddy Tierney, Funeral Director. Pat had an upbeat manner and displayed great empathy, in his dealings with people. He knew everybody and loved conversing with people, always offering the positive word, where possible. As a community supporter, he served on the Supervisory Committee of Roscrea Credit Union for seven years. In his younger days, Pat was active with the Roscrea Operatic Society and his Oklahoma role in 1963, is fondly recalled.

His greatest commitment though was to his wife and their eight children.

It is appropriate to finish this tribute with two lines from Pat Joe Whelan’s poem  ( Roscrea’s Hurling Men), which was written to celebrate the club’s first county Senior hurling  title win in 1968 –

‘’ Well we’ll not forget Pat Dynan, the hero of the day,
His hurling power for half an hour , carved victory for Roscrea’’.

Pat is survived by his wife Jo Jo ( nee Moloney) , sons  Trevor, Padraig, Tafaline , Shane,  Emmet, his daughters Orna, Serhena, & Margaret, sons in law , daughters in law, grandchildren, nieces , nephews,  other relatives and a wide circle of friends. He was predeceased by his two sisters , brother and daughter- in- law Angie, who died suddenly in February 2007.

Rest in peace, dear friend.
